Experience

2001 - Present

Freelance Graphic Artist

After working with a multitude of design companies, I gained valuable knowledge in the graphic arts field. I made the venture to become a freelance designer and worked on local, national, to global projects over the years expanding my portfolio and perfecting my craft.

1992-1994

Cook Sign & Design

Worked at Cook Sign & Design during and after my college education at NMU. While there, I learned about how the graphic design business operated. I expanded my knowledge in the graphic arts by working in all areas of the business, from graphic design layouts, engraving, screen printing, vinyl cutting, peeling, masking, and laying, billboard layouts and painting, along with installation for many clients. It was great experience and key to my start in the graphic arts world.

1984-1993

Student Artist

During High School, I was developing my skills taking art every year and becoming an art teaching assistant for underclassmen my senior year. I was involved in the school newspaper creating comic strips, designing yearbook covers, painting backdrops in drama club, painting murals, designing signs and logos.

During College, I worked as an Art Gallery Assistant setting up exhibits and doing presentations of exhibits. I created cartoons for the Northwind newspaper, murals, and logo designs for clubs at NMU.

About Me

Born in Marquette, Michigan, I’m a native of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula along the shore of Lake Superior. Raised in Bessemer, MI until I was 14, my Family then moved to Crystal Falls, MI until I graduated from High School with a scholarship in Art Education. In 1988, I enrolled at Northern Michigan University where I started in the field of Art Education. After considerable thought, I made the switch to the field of Illustration and Graphic Design. In 1994, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration/Graphic Design. I remained in Marquette to work on my skills working for local design companies and starting my family. From 1995 to 2005, I worked as a manager at a local store and continued my freelance career, while being a stay at home Dad. This gave me the opportunity to build up my portfolio while raising my children and creating projects for many local businesses, clubs, and non profit organizations. I have created logos, business cards, letterheads, posters, paintings, CD booklets for musical artists, children’s book Illustrations, and more over the years. In 2017, I took up Disc Golf in my free time, where I incorporated more design work connections creating designs for local clubs, developing my own brand with Superior Discs, and professional disc golfer JohnE McCray. Wanting to further expand my creative flow, I started doing Videography at disc golf events and studied Web Design. Taking everything a step further, I formed my business “Mark Your Designs” to promote, create, and solidify my career into the future.
